Corelle 5k Race Recap

6 Oct

On Saturday, September 30th I ran the Corelle 5k as part of the Wineglass Marathon Weekend in Corning, NY.

Even though I have run both the Wineglass Half Marathon and Full Marathons before, I had never done the 5k. So when I made plans to meet Day and Bruno in Corning to do the half, and they told me they signed up for the 5k, I was in.  The 5k was the day before the half marathon, so we all used it as a shake out run for the main event on Sunday.

We stayed in Horseheads, NY which was a 15-minute drive from Corning. We left for the race at 7am and made it to Corning-Painted Post High School, where it started, with plenty of time. Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy. So, after using the (real) bathrooms at the high school stadium, we went back to the car until about 7:45 to try to stay warm.  It was in the 50s but felt colder because it was overcast and rainy. I tried not to let it bother me too much though, because I knew that could mean PERFECT running weather the next day for 13.1.  I wore capris and a tank top and decided to wear my fleece lined arm sleeves as well.

The race started right on time.  My goal was to take it easy, around 10:30-11:00 pace, and pick up the pace to my goal half marathon pace in the last half mile or so.

Day and I stayed together and talked the whole time. The course was a simple out and back but it was pretty and there were a ton of spectators. It was also nice to see Bruno when he was on the way back and we were on the way out (he’s crazy fast – ended up placing 2nd in his age group).

He looped back once he was done and snapped a few photos for us as we neared the finish.

Overall the paces felt nice and easy, though we caught ourselves going way too fast a few times. But I felt comfortable, even if they were a bit faster than I expected them to be.  I hoped that was a good sign for the next day!

32 minutes for an easy 5k? Nothing to scoff at!

After crossing the finish we got our medals, grabbed some water and headed out (since it was still freezing and rainy). But not before a finishers photo, of course.

Overall, the Corelle 5k was really well organized and had some good crowd support. It was also really inexpensive for everything we received – I believe I paid $35 and received a medal, a long sleeved cotton black t-shirt (you can see Day wearing it in the first photo), and a Corelleware bowl that is the PERFECT cereal bowl!  I would definitely do it again if I was in town for the weekend.

Sounds great. I did the half and thought about the 5k. I would do it if I lived nearby.
