The hubby and I have just been bumming around home for the past few days. We’re both off of work until January 3rd.
I was feeling a little bummed out this morning – maybe it was the post-Christmas blues, the weather, whatever. All I wanted to do was run. Unfortunately it is still super icy outside so my husband advised against it. I got even more bummed. Then I decided to exercise some retail therapy using some of my Christmas money. 🙂
I ordered a Saucony Neckwarmer/Gaiter thingy (love Running Warehouse’s two-day shipping!!). I also went to Dick’s and picked up a pair of YakTrax and found a swimsuit on clearance! No joke, the YakTrax and swimsuit were just $48 total. I was psyched. I’ve been wanting a pair of YakTrax for about two years now. Everytime the winter rolls around and it’s icy I wish I had a pair. I’m glad I went and got them finally. I’ve also been wanting to get a swimsuit so that I could swim at the gym when I don’t run. I was psyched to find one for super cheap ($22) that fit.
When I got home from the store I immediately took my new YakTrax out for a run before the sun started setting.
They felt really good. I just had to get used to the sound of my feet hitting the ground – they sort of sound like cleats.
I feel so much better after a little retail therapy and a good run. Gotta love those endorphins. 🙂
My day is off to a slower start than usual. I’ve got a dentist appointment in about an hour so I did the whole work from home thing this morning.
The best part about working from home?
The purring kitty on my lap. Gotta love it.
I took my last Zumba class of the session yesterday, before meeting the family for a late dinner at Olive Garden to celebrate my parents anniversary. By the time we got home I was exhausted and ready to take a shower! The next Zumba session doesn’t start for a few weeks but I’ve already signed up. I’m going to change it up a little and take a class mid-day (from noon to 1 on Thursdays). I checked my work calendar and I don’t foresee any conflicts, and if for some reason I can’t make it to a class I can always make it up by attending a class in the evening with the same instructor. I’m really trying to switch around my exercise schedule because I end up feeling SO stressed if I do it after work. I’m not sure why this is, but I just feel like it conflicts with so many things. Switching Zumba to during my lunch break is the first step. Next I need to figure out what to do with Yoga and running…
I received the pair of compression shorts I ordered in the mail on Monday. I put them on just for 5 or so minutes to make sure they fit okay and WOW. I felt the relief just in that time. My hips and IT bands tend to get really sort the long distance I run and these hit that area so well! I’m excited to try them out after the Pittsburgh Half. Between the shorts and my compression sleeves, I’m going to look really stylish on the drive home, hah. I’ll be sure to do a full review of them after I try them out post-race.
We also got our new bread maker in the mail. Neither the hubby or I have ever used/owned a bread maker so this will be an interesting experiment. But I’m really excited to have control over the ingredients and not have to pay crazy prices for healthy bread at the grocery store. I’m hoping to try it out this weekend. Fingers crossed it goes well.
Time to pack up my work computer and head over to the dentist. You know you’re jealous.
I woke up to snow this morning. WTF?! It’s freaking late April Mother Nature. and it’s snowing. it’s not accumulating, but still.
I ran a ton this weekend. it felt good. but it feels even better to be tapering!
Saturday I ran 9.5 miles. I was supposed to do 10 but for some reason it ended up a little short, whoops.
Sunday I did a 5k. 37:12 was my final time, which I’ll take. My legs were tired, and I really tried to book it. Not a PR by any stretch but the best time in a while, a day after a 9.5 mile run, so I’ll take it. Total mileage for the weekend was just shy of a half marathon, which I’m pretty confident is good prep for the Pittsburgh Half in two weeks!
The hubby and I did a bit of online shopping this weekend, for house stuff and running stuff. I got a pair of compression shorts, ordered some Gus for my upcoming races, and ordered a pair of running shoes since the model I’m currently wearing are on super sale because of the newer model coming out. I’m so psyched to get it all and I will definitely be sharing them as I receive them. Lots of packages coming to our house this week! 🙂
Speaking of Gus. Until this training cycle, I’ve been using Clif Shots (the gels) for my running fuel during long runs. I had the opportunity to try some Gus, so I went for it, and I love love love the Vanilla flavor. Unfortunately I ran out a few days ago (thus the online order for a box of them) but I had a few Clif Shots left over and decided to take them on my long run on Saturday. what a mistake. The texture made me want to hurl as soon as I ate them. Luckily I didn’t, but I was shocked how much my palette/texture preference has changed. Go figure!
In other random news, I registered for the Philly Color Run. I’m going to do it with a few friends and it should be a blast! Between the Warrior Dash and the Color Run I think I’ve about hit my quota of unique-for-fun races for the year. 🙂
Anyhow, I hope your week is off to a good start – snow or no snow!
It’s Friday! SWEET!
I haven’t been around the past couple of days but there’s been a lot going on at work and at home. I was at an all day work retreat yesterday and by the time I got home my brain was fried. I had that I-just-took-the-SATs feeling.
Anyhow, here are a couple of highlights from the past few days in a nice organized list.
- I finally got my first Shamrock Shake of the season. This is the only thing I ever get at MickeyDs and omg it is so worth eating whatever it is made of. I drank the whole thing in probably less than 10 minutes. oops… but I’m not sorry. SO GOOD.
- Geisha has to wear an Elizabethan collar for 2 weeks. She’s been chewing on her paws and I took her to the vet on Wednesday. The vet took some fur samples to get analyzed but in the meantime she has to wear it so she wont chew or lick her paws. She looks so sad all the time, I really hate seeing her like that. I can’t wait until we can take it off of her. 😦
- Yesterday I got in a 3.5 mile run with 2 miles at a faster pace. It felt good. I bet I looked super awesome wearing black capris, my black running vest, a grey shirt underneath and my bright pink shoes. 🙂 Maybe I at least looked fast?
- At work today I’m getting a bunch of little, mundane, boring tasks done. You know how those add up so fast? After yesterdays work retreat, my brain still feels fried so I figured I would use today to take care of some things that have been hanging over my head for a while and get back to the real work on Monday after having the weekend to decompress.
- Speaking of this weekend, it’s going to be busy but fun, so I’m looking forward to it. Tonight I’m meeting a friend for dinner, tomorrow I’m going to a church retreat for the morning, and Sunday I’m going to be getting my doubly sweat on with a 5 mile run with my dad in the morning and a Zumbathon later in the day. My legs will be pretty tired by the time Sunday is over I think.
It’s Tuesday. Doesn’t it feel like it should be Friday already? geesh.
Yesterday I had some blood taken at the doctor so I didn’t feel like pushing myself through an intense heated yoga session. So instead I went for a three mile run. The weather was awesome outside – not too hot and not too cold. And now that the sun is staying up longer and longer I was actually able to see the ground I was running on. 🙂
I also wore my new shoes! Check out how bright pink these are!
They’re Saucony Kinvara 2s – I was previously running in the first version.
They really stood out with my black tights, haha. As soon as I put them on I realized how worn down my old pair are. It was like walking on clouds.
During my run my legs didn’t feel nearly as brick-like and I had no shin pain. It was all in all a pretty good run. Much better than yesterdays.
Dinner was simple last night – smart dogs with some steamer veggies on the side.
I spent the evening watching Revenge on Hulu.(source)
Is anyone else addicted to this show? I just got into it so I’m literally on episode 3 but I can’t wait to catch up and watch it in “real time”.
