A gorgeous Saturday for a run

7 Jan

WOW. What a gorgeous day!

I went for a 5 mile run this morning around 11 and was able to wear capris, a short-sleeved shirt and my new running vest!

That is unheard of for central PA in the beginning of January! I love it. It took much less time to get dressed to run than normal. 🙂 And I seriously love my new running vest. It doesn’t ride up, it has nice big pockets and it is the perfect weight to provide enough wind resistance and warmth without overheating me. It’s the Brooks Essential Run Vest if you’re interested.

Despite the perfect weather my run this morning was a little bit crappy. The wind seemed to always be going against me and my legs felt like lead. So I took a bunch of walk breaks, but I kept pushing until I hit the 5.0 mark on my Garmin.

After my run the hubby and I spent a few hours taking care of errands and cleaning up the apartment.

The plan for tonight is leftovers for dinner, and some time in our sweat pants. We are super exciting on our Saturday nights, hah.

Tomorrow I’m hoping to get in some yoga. Instead of the typical hatha yoga, the morning class tomorrow is power yoga, so I’m interested but also a little nervous to try it, so we will see. To be honest, I’m not even sure of the difference between power yoga and hatha.

Happy Saturday!!

Christmas gift, vanilla gu and quiche

17 Dec

Happy Saturday! I hope your weekend is off to a good start.

Last night when we got home from work my Christmas present from the hubby was waiting. As an aside, this year we didn’t spend much on each other, in fact we both picked out our presents that we wanted. We figured our money is all in the same bank account anyhow and we both might as well pick something out that we really want.

I picked…

medal hanger

…a medal hanger from Allied Medal Displays! I have been wanting one of these for a while but didn’t feel I had enough bling to hang on it. Once I completed my fourth half marathon in October I finally felt I had earned enough to buy one of these. When the hubby suggested it as my Christmas present, I jumped at the chance. I was super impressed with the quality from the second it came out of the box – it is super slick looking. It wasn’t difficult to hang up either. Now I look at it every time I walk into the bedroom. Talk about something to motivate you to keep going!

This morning I woke up, ate a quick granola breakfast and ran a few errands. Once I got home I switched the laundry over and headed out for a run. I ran a nice slow 4.5 miles. Part of the way through I broke open the Vanilla Bean Gu I got a few weeks ago. I don’t normally use gels/gus for anything shorter than seven miles but I’m trying to find the best schedule for me to fuel on so I wanted to try taking something after two miles.

I’ve read mixed reviews of the Vanilla Bean Gu but I really really liked it. It was a nice change from the citrus tastes I’m used to during races between other gels and gatorade.  The texture was not gross at all either. I was pleasantly surprised! I’m looking forward to trying the other flavors I picked up to see what they’re like.

After running and showering I put together a quick crustless Quiche. This idea popped into my head a few days ago when I was thinking about all the random leftover stuff we had in the fridge. I took the egg beaters equivalent of 5 eggs, 1/2 c milk, leftover Quorn “beef” crumbles, half of a small onion (chopped) and a handful of cheese. I just mixed it all together in a greased pie plate and cooked it at 350 for 30 minutes.quiche

It came out super tasty! Don’t mind the little hole in it – I was checking to make sure it was cooked the full way through and realized after I cut into it that I needed to grab a photo.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Sorry I didn’t check in yesterday. I just didn’t have anything interesting to say.

I also promise to get my race report up soon – I’ve been lazy, but I finally have photos and my official time (which wasn’t too great) and all that stuff.

1) I spent most of monday at work in my Zensha sleeves. My legs hurt BAD. I’ll say it again – stupid hills. My calves, quads and IT band were on fire all day. I walked like I was 90 and took an elevator whenever I could.

2) Luckily on Tuesday my mom (who is a PT assistant) showed me the glory and pain of the foam roller.(source)

That picture is not of mine – mine’s boring and white. Anyhow I used it on my calves, quads and IT band on my one leg and it helped a lot! But it hurt a lot too. I did it again yesterday and it helped a ton and hurt a ton again. so I’m (almost) pain free when I walk now.

3) I finally won a blog contest! I never win those things. Erin was having a contest giving away a box of granola from Nuts about Granola and somehow my number was picked and I won. Yay! The box came on monday and it had 6 little bags of granola. I love the little bags! Great for taking with you in a pinch. I’m excited to try it out. No photo sorry.

4) We are T-3 days til the hubby and I go to paradise to celebrate our first anniversary!I can’t wait to relax!!

5) My lunches this week have been of the clean-out-the-perishables-before-we-go-on-vacay type. Mexican leftovers on monday, chinese leftovers on tuesday, and a wrap of cheese and black beans today. Not that exciting or photo worthy.

6) I don’t know if I’m creative enough to have pre-written posts lined up while I’m gone like some bloggers do. I may have one or two but that’ll probably be it.

Enjoy your wednesday!

Biscoff spread + sugar cookie ball

5 Oct

Happy hump day! half way there.

As I said I would, I went for a run yesterday. 25 minutes or so – I’m not totally sure. and I just wore my watch, not my garmin so I’m not sure of the full distance. I really need to figure out how to wear my garmin and not obsess over my pace at every second. I want to wear it for the half but don’t want it to mess with my head.

After running, dinner last night was what the hubby and I called Pittsburgh Salads. We have a thing for pittsburgh based foods I guess. The salads are simple – romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing and french fries! 🙂 The fries make it a little more fun.

Fun fact: in college in the dining hall they used to have chicken salad with french fries a couple times a week and the line was always out of control. I almost always got one when they served it, though now I’d ask for no chicken since I’ve since changed my meat-eating ways. The other big thing was chicken tender wraps, my roommate was obsessed with them, I could kind of take them or leave them.

I also made some couscous on the side because it looked good when I grocery shopped last week and picked it up. I don’t know what brand it was but it was super easy to make (you just bring it to a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes) and it tasted and smelled really really good. It was a nice side for the salad.

After dinner I tried something awesome:

I dipped the remaining sugar cookie ball in a little bit of biscoff spread. YUM. I bet it tastes a lot like the recipes that were written for frosting for the sugar cookie balls.

I also ate another spoonful of biscoff spread straight from the jar. it. was. awesome.

I kept thinking about getting another spoonful all night but managed to resist it and got distracted when the hubby and I spent like two hours trying to open a backup from his iPod that had all of these notes and fun things we wrote down from our honeymoon (almost a year ago). Seriously though, it’s so addicting, what do they put in it?!

On a  more boring note, lunch is Annies bernie Os, some of the leftover couscous, a fuji apple and some organic cheeto type things.I’m starting to run out of groceries so boring canned soup it was!

Hot yoga is planned for tonight, I’m pretty psyched.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Weekday 10 miler: check!

30 Sep

10 miles is done and done. At 5pm yesterday my dad and I laced up and out we went for about 2 hours of running. I don’t know what it was but the run felt easy and I felt great the entire time. I love when that happens!

And we cut 5 minutes off of our time from Saturday so I’ll take that as a major bonus!

I hope the half feels as easy and comfortable as yesterday did.

To be honest, I’m pretty shocked it felt that easy. After a full day of work I thought my legs would be dragging but surprisingly they weren’t. I ran without my Garmin too – only with my watch. That seemed to help me not analyze my pace constantly and prevented me from feeling like I was going “too slow” like I always do. Maybe I’m onto something here…

When I came home I was greeted with a little package – my compression sleeves came! I got a pair of these.

After my shower I put them on and wore them all night while I slept (it’s okay to wear them that long right?)

Here’s an awkward picture of what they look like:

When I took them off this morning my legs felt like brand new. Well still tired, but they didn’t ache and hurt like they normally do for anything over 9 miles.

I’m off to work for a few hours before running some errands and heading out for the weekend – I’ve got some fun stuff planned this weekend. So I’ll check in on Monday probably.

Have a great weekend!
